From The President's Desk:

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT

Captain RichWelcome Aboard Everyone -

Our fall meeting in Ludington was very informative. We heard from the DNR and Coast Guard regarding Coast Guard boarding, Implementation of the TWIC card (Transportation worker identification card), "Documentation" of vessels, and boat inspections.

Dan O'Keefe was outstanding in the overseeing of the MCBA program. For those of you that don't know Dan, he has taken over Chuck Pistis position, and was one of MCBA past recipients of our scholarship awards. What an honor to have him return to help out the organization that helped him.

If your boat is over 25 feet you'll probably need to have it documented under the law. To find all information for the "Application for simplified measurement" form #CG5397, and form (#CG1258) for Documentation, you can visit USCG homeport web site at: homeport.uscg.mil , you can also if you need added information.

I would like to thank Jim Fenner for setting up our fall program, Frank English for another great raffle, and to Ron Dubsky for setting up our accommodations and wonderful meals. (WHAT HAPPENED TO DESSERT Ron???)

Many new changes are being implemented for the Charter Boat industry beginning in "2008". I would encourage everyone that needs to have their boat documented to do so this winter, to add PML lights to all life vests, and to prepare all information needed to obtain your TWIC card, which goes into effect September 2008. We will keep you informed on all updates as we receive them.

As of this writing MCBA has hired a Lobbyist firm to represent us in the new 6% Tax Law that is going into effect. This firm is working at getting this repealed or to have the Charter Boats exempt. I would like to thank all the Captains that have contributed toward the cost of the Lobbyist and to ask those who have not to please remember we are all in this together. We need to stand united as an organization.

I wish everyone a Happy and Safe Holiday season.

Captain Rich Haslett
President Michigan Charter Boat Association
